Symptoms and signs
- Fullness or a firm, button-like lump under one or both nipples
- Breast tenderness or soreness
- A rounded or soft chest even with a lean body
- One side larger than the other
- Self-consciousness in fitted clothes or when swimming
See a doctor urgently if
- A hard, fixed lump on one side, skin dimpling or nipple discharge needs prompt medical review
- Swelling that appears suddenly or is painful should be checked soon
If you have a medical emergency, call 112 or go to the nearest hospital. Do not wait for an enquiry reply.
Causes and risk factors
- Hormone changes, such as puberty or ageing
- Some medicines, steroids and recreational substances
- Certain health conditions, for example liver, kidney or thyroid problems
- Weight gain that adds fat to the chest (pseudogynecomastia)
- In many people no clear cause is found
How a doctor assesses it
A doctor asks about your health and medicines, then examines the chest to tell gland tissue from fat. Depending on what they find, they may advise blood tests or an ultrasound. The aim is to confirm the type, look for a cause that needs its own treatment, and rule out other conditions before planning surgery.
Who may need it
Surgery is usually considered for adults whose enlargement has settled and still bothers them, after causes have been checked. In younger people doctors often wait. Whether you are suitable is decided by the surgeon after an examination.
Treatment options
Watchful waiting
In teenagers, or when it started recently, it can settle without treatment. A doctor may suggest reviewing it after some time.
Treating the cause
If a medicine or a health condition is involved, addressing it may help. Never stop a prescribed medicine yourself; ask the doctor who prescribed it.
Liposuction
Removes excess fat through very small cuts. It suits chests where fat makes up most of the enlargement.
Gland removal
Takes out firm glandular tissue, often through a small cut at the edge of the areola. It may be combined with liposuction. Larger or sagging cases need a wider discussion about skin.
What the procedure involves
Your surgeon examines you, explains the technique and decides, with the anaesthetist, the type of anaesthesia. The operation removes fat, gland tissue or both, and the cuts are closed with stitches. Some people go home the same day; others stay briefly.
Removed tissue may be sent for laboratory testing. You will usually wear a compression garment and have follow-up visits to check healing.
Recovery
- Swelling, bruising and tightness are common at first
- A compression garment is often advised for a period
- Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting are limited until your surgeon allows them
- Follow-up visits check healing and stitches
- The final shape appears gradually as swelling settles
Everyone heals differently. Follow your own surgeon's instructions.
Risks
- Bleeding or a collection of blood or fluid under the skin
- Infection
- Uneven contour, asymmetry or lumpiness
- Changes in nipple or skin sensation
- Visible scars
- Needing a second procedure to refine the result
- Risks linked to anaesthesia
Your surgeon will explain which risks matter most for you. No result can be guaranteed.
Cost and payment
The cost of gynecomastia treatment depends on your case and cannot be fixed without a medical assessment. These are the main things that change it:
- The technique used: liposuction, gland removal or both
- How much tissue needs to be treated
- The hospital or day-care centre and the room type
- The surgeon's and anaesthetist's fees
- Tests and scans before surgery
- Medicines, dressings and follow-up visits
- Whether you pay in cash, use EMI or claim insurance
Our team explains your options for cash, EMI and insurance, helps you compare packages and handles insurance paperwork. Try the EMI calculator to plan your payments. Insurance cover depends on your policy and insurer, and approval cannot be promised.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- What type of gynecomastia do I have, and what is likely causing it?
- Do I need any tests first?
- Is surgery advised now, or should I wait?
- Where will the scars be?
- Who will perform my procedure, and how often have they done it?
- What are the risks for me and how are complications handled?
- What is the full cost, in writing, and what does it include?
Check that any doctor is registered, for example on the National Medical Commission register or with the state medical council.

Frequently asked questions
Will gynecomastia go away on its own?
Sometimes. It can settle in teenagers or when a cause is removed. If it has lasted a long time or bothers you, a doctor can advise on options.
Can exercise remove it?
Exercise can reduce chest fat, which helps if fat is part of the problem. It cannot remove firm gland tissue. A doctor can tell which applies to you.
Will there be scars?
Cuts are usually small, but scars are possible. Ask your surgeon where they would be and how they usually heal.
How long is recovery?
It differs from person to person and depends on the technique. Your surgeon will give you a timeline for your case.
Can you help with insurance and EMI?
Yes. Our team explains cash, EMI and insurance options and helps with the paperwork. Insurance cover depends on your policy and insurer, and approval cannot be promised.
