Symptoms and signs
- A pocket of fat around the stomach that does not respond to diet and exercise
- A stomach shape that bothers you in clothes
- Fat that stays even when your weight is stable
- Wanting to understand surgery versus other options
See a doctor urgently if
- Fever, spreading redness, severe pain or a very swollen, tight abdomen after any procedure needs urgent review
- Breathlessness or chest pain after surgery is an emergency
If you have a medical emergency, call 112 or go to the nearest hospital. Do not wait for an enquiry reply.
Causes and risk factors
- Fat distribution is partly inherited
- Weight changes and ageing
- Pregnancy and hormonal changes
- Lifestyle factors such as activity and diet
How a doctor assesses it
A surgeon examines the abdomen, pinches the tissue to judge how much is fat and how much is skin, and asks about your health, medicines, smoking and weight history. They explain whether liposuction suits you or whether another procedure would fit better.
Who may need it
Surgeons usually consider adults in generally good health, near a stable weight, with fat in a defined area and reasonably firm skin. They also look at your medical history, smoking and plans for pregnancy. Whether you are suitable is decided after an examination.
Treatment options
Diet and exercise
Improve overall health and body fat, though you cannot choose which area loses fat.
Non-surgical contouring
Effects are generally smaller and vary from person to person. Ask a doctor what to expect.
Liposuction
Removes fat from a defined area through small cuts using a thin tube. It does not tighten loose skin.
Tummy tuck
A larger operation that can address loose skin and separated muscles, sometimes together with liposuction.
What the procedure involves
The surgeon marks the area, and the anaesthetist gives anaesthesia chosen for your case. A solution is commonly injected to limit bleeding, and the fat is suctioned out through small cuts. Different techniques exist, and your surgeon explains which one would be used and why.
A compression garment is usually fitted at the end. Ask whether the procedure is done as a day case and who looks after you if you need help afterwards.
Recovery
- Swelling, bruising and soreness are expected
- A compression garment is commonly advised for a period
- Walking is encouraged early, as your surgeon advises
- The shape keeps settling as swelling reduces
- Return to work and exercise depends on your surgeon's advice
Everyone heals differently. Follow your own surgeon's instructions.
Risks
- Uneven contour, dents or lumpiness
- Fluid collection under the skin
- Numbness or changes in skin sensation
- Loose skin or skin colour changes
- Infection or bleeding
- Blood clots, and rarely more serious problems
- Risks linked to anaesthesia
Your surgeon will explain which risks matter most for you. No result can be guaranteed.
Cost and payment
The cost of tummy liposuction treatment depends on your case and cannot be fixed without a medical assessment. These are the main things that change it:
- How many areas are treated
- The technique used
- The hospital or day-care centre and the room type
- The surgeon's and anaesthetist's fees
- Tests and scans before surgery
- Medicines, dressings and follow-up visits
- Whether you pay in cash, use EMI or claim insurance
Our team explains your options for cash, EMI and insurance, helps you compare packages and handles insurance paperwork. Try the EMI calculator to plan your payments. Insurance cover depends on your policy and insurer, and approval cannot be promised.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Is liposuction right for my body, or would another approach suit me better?
- How much improvement is realistic for me?
- Will I have loose skin afterwards?
- Where will the cuts be?
- Who will perform my procedure, and how often have they done it?
- What are the risks for me and how are complications handled?
- What is the full cost, in writing, and what does it include?
Check that any doctor is registered, for example on the National Medical Commission register or with the state medical council.

Frequently asked questions
Will I lose weight with liposuction?
It removes fat from an area but is not a weight-loss method. If weight loss is your main aim, ask the doctor about other options.
Is the result permanent?
Fat cells removed from the treated area do not return there, but gaining weight can add fat elsewhere. Skin and ageing changes continue over time.
Will I have loose skin?
It is possible, especially if skin is already loose. Your surgeon should assess your skin before advising liposuction.
Can I have it if I plan a pregnancy?
Many surgeons advise waiting. Tell the doctor your plans so they can advise you.
Can you help with insurance and EMI?
Yes. Our team explains cash, EMI and insurance options and helps with the paperwork. Insurance cover depends on your policy and insurer, and approval cannot be promised.
