Symptoms and signs
- Unhappiness with the size, shape or angle of the nose
- A nose that looks different after an injury
- Difficulty breathing through the nose
- A bump or a nose tip you would like to change
- A wish to improve both look and breathing
See a doctor urgently if
- Heavy nosebleed that will not stop, fever, or severe pain after surgery needs urgent review
- A new injury to the nose with deformity or breathing difficulty should be checked soon
If you have a medical emergency, call 112 or go to the nearest hospital. Do not wait for an enquiry reply.
Causes and risk factors
- Nasal shape is largely inherited
- Injury to the nose
- Previous nasal surgery
- Conditions that affect the nasal structure
How a doctor assesses it
The surgeon asks what you would like to change and examines the nose inside and out. They may take photographs to plan the surgery and discuss what is realistic for your face. If breathing is a concern, an ENT examination may be advised.
Who may need it
Rhinoplasty is for adults whose nose has finished growing, who are in good general health and have realistic expectations. A good consultation includes honest discussion of what can be changed and what cannot. The surgeon decides whether you are suitable.
Treatment options
No surgery
Some concerns can be discussed without an operation. A doctor can explain what non-surgical options can and cannot do.
Cosmetic rhinoplasty
Reshapes the bone and cartilage to change the look of the nose.
Functional rhinoplasty or septoplasty
Improves breathing by correcting the internal structure. It is sometimes combined with cosmetic changes.
Revision rhinoplasty
Corrects problems after an earlier operation. It is more complex, so experience matters.
What the procedure involves
The surgeon and anaesthetist decide the type of anaesthesia. The operation may be done through cuts inside the nose or a small cut at its base, and the surgeon reshapes bone and cartilage. A splint is placed on the nose, and soft supports may be placed inside.
Most people go home the same day or after a short stay. You will have follow-up visits to remove the splint and check healing.
Recovery
- Swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes are common early on
- A splint stays on for a period your surgeon decides
- Blowing the nose and strenuous activity are avoided for a time
- Swelling goes down slowly, and the final shape takes many months
- Sun protection and careful handling of the nose are advised
Everyone heals differently. Follow your own surgeon's instructions.
Risks
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Breathing difficulty or a blocked nose
- Asymmetry or a result that differs from what you hoped
- Numbness or skin changes
- A need for revision surgery
- Risks linked to anaesthesia
Your surgeon will explain which risks matter most for you. No result can be guaranteed.
Cost and payment
The cost of rhinoplasty treatment depends on your case and cannot be fixed without a medical assessment. These are the main things that change it:
- Whether the surgery is cosmetic, functional or both
- How complex the changes are, or whether it is a revision
- The hospital or day-care centre and the room type
- The surgeon's and anaesthetist's fees
- Tests and scans before surgery
- Medicines, dressings and follow-up visits
- Whether you pay in cash, use EMI or claim insurance
Our team explains your options for cash, EMI and insurance, helps you compare packages and handles insurance paperwork. Try the EMI calculator to plan your payments. Insurance cover depends on your policy and insurer, and approval cannot be promised.

Frequently asked questions
How long until I see the final result?
Swelling settles slowly, so the final shape can take many months to appear.
Will rhinoplasty change my breathing?
It can, in either direction, depending on what is done. Tell your surgeon about any breathing problems so they can plan for them.
Can the result be guaranteed?
No. Surgeons can plan carefully, but healing varies from person to person.
Is rhinoplasty only cosmetic?
No. It can also improve breathing or correct injury damage. Many people have both reasons.
Can you help with insurance and EMI?
Yes. Our team explains cash, EMI and insurance options and helps with the paperwork. Insurance cover depends on your policy and insurer, and approval cannot be promised.
