Symptoms and signs
- Long-lasting blockage of one or both nostrils
- Frequent nosebleeds
- Snoring or noisy breathing
- Repeated sinus infections
- A feeling of pressure or facial discomfort
See a doctor urgently if
- Heavy or uncontrolled nosebleeds need emergency care
- Fever, severe headache or swelling around the eyes with nasal symptoms needs urgent medical review
If you have a medical emergency, call 112 or go to the nearest hospital. Do not wait for an enquiry reply.
Causes and risk factors
- Natural variation present from birth
- Injury to the nose
- Allergies that cause swelling inside the nose
- Previous nasal surgery
How a doctor assesses it
An ENT doctor examines the inside of the nose, often with a small camera (nasal endoscopy). They check whether the blockage is from the septum, swollen tissues, allergy or other problems. A scan may be advised if sinus disease is suspected.
Who may need it
Surgery is considered when a deviated septum causes long-lasting symptoms that medicines do not control. The ENT surgeon decides after examination.
Treatment options
Medicines first
Nasal sprays, saline washes and allergy care can ease symptoms. A doctor advises which suit you.
Septoplasty
The surgeon straightens or removes the bent part of the septum to open the airway.
Combined surgery
Septoplasty may be combined with surgery on swollen turbinates, sinuses or the nose shape (septorhinoplasty).
Not advised
If symptoms come from allergy or other causes, surgery may not help, and your doctor will explain why.
What the procedure involves
Septoplasty is done under general or sometimes local anaesthesia, usually through the nostrils, so no outside cuts show. The surgeon corrects the septum and may place soft splints or packing for a short period.
Many people go home the same day. Follow-up visits remove splints and check healing.
Recovery
- Blocked nose and mild discomfort for some days
- Saline rinses and care as advised
- Avoid blowing the nose hard and heavy activity for a period
- Sleep with the head raised as advised
- Return urgently for heavy bleeding
Everyone heals differently. Follow your own surgeon's instructions.
Risks
- Bleeding
- Infection
- A hole in the septum, which is uncommon
- Changes in the shape of the nose
- Numbness of the upper teeth or lip, usually temporary
- Persistent blockage or the need for further surgery
- Risks linked to anaesthesia
Your surgeon will explain which risks matter most for you. No result can be guaranteed.
Cost and payment
The cost of septoplasty treatment depends on your case and cannot be fixed without a medical assessment. These are the main things that change it:
- Whether other nasal or sinus surgery is combined
- Type of anaesthesia and length of stay
- The hospital or day-care centre and the room type
- The surgeon's and anaesthetist's fees
- Tests and scans before surgery
- Medicines, dressings and follow-up visits
- Whether you pay in cash, use EMI or claim insurance
Our team explains your options for cash, EMI and insurance, helps you compare packages and handles insurance paperwork. Try the EMI calculator to plan your payments. Insurance cover depends on your policy and insurer, and approval cannot be promised.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Is my blocked nose really from the septum?
- Do I need other procedures along with septoplasty?
- What will recovery be like?
- Will the outside of my nose change?
- Who will perform my procedure, and how often have they done it?
- What are the risks for me and how are complications handled?
- What is the full cost, in writing, and what does it include?
Check that any doctor is registered, for example on the National Medical Commission register or with the state medical council.

Frequently asked questions
Does everyone with a deviated septum need surgery?
No. Many people have a slightly bent septum without symptoms. Surgery is for those with persistent problems.
Will septoplasty change the look of my nose?
Septoplasty works inside the nose and does not usually change its outer shape.
Is it painful?
Most people feel pressure and blockage rather than severe pain. Pain is managed with medicines as your doctor advises.
Can the septum bend again?
It can, rarely. Your surgeon will explain the chance.
Can you help with insurance and EMI?
Yes. Our team explains cash, EMI and insurance options and helps with the paperwork. Insurance cover depends on your policy and insurer, and approval cannot be promised.
